Heathton House

Claverley, Wolverhampton

An arrival driveway and front entrance garden designed as a calm retreat on approach to the house, offering a moment of pause and transition before entering the home. The design responds directly to the 18th-century brick farmhouse, drawing on its character, scale, and material language to inform the overall composition.

An Arts and Crafts influence is introduced through considered spatial arrangement, natural materials, and refined detailing. Planting, stonework, and built elements are carefully composed to feel rooted and timeless, creating a setting that quietly reflects the historic architecture while softening the arrival experience.

A reflective pool sits at the heart of the arrival garden, encircled by table-top trees to create a sheltered, courtyard-like retreat. This calm, enclosed space offers a moment to pause on arrival, with water and canopy combining to form a quiet place for rest and reflection.

Topiary is used throughout to introduce structure and a sense of timelessness, carefully shaping the garden while tying it back into the wider landscape context. The result is a composed yet relaxed setting that gently bridges house and landscape.

The formality of the topiary is softened by rambling roses planted in pots, which introduce a looser, more romantic cottage garden character. Their seasonal growth and gentle movement contrast with the clipped structure, bringing softness, colour, and a sense of informality to the otherwise composed setting.

A simplified material palette of clay pavers, gravel, and reclaimed natural stone paving helps ground the design within its historic context. These materials echo the character of the existing garden, creating continuity and a quiet sense of age and authenticity throughout the space.
