Skylark

Ludlow, Shropshire

Inspired by Zen philosophy and pioneer landscapes, this scheme introduces a sense of natural simplicity, with the intent of enabling comfortable family living within a wild and expansive backdrop. The design explores the relationship between control and spontaneity, where moments of contrast between rigorous geometry and the softer edge of nature become central to the experience.

A close dialogue between landscape and built form allows the architecture to sit quietly within its context. The massing is softened through planting and material transition, with a restrained palette of hard and soft elements that connect back to the wider landscape.

A progression of landscape spaces leads one through the garden, revealing shifting sequences of experience—uncovering both unexpected views and moments of intimacy and refuge

A variation of pioneer tree species including Amelanchier, Pinus, and Malus were introduced close to the house to anchor the garden within its setting. These species were selected for their naturalistic form, seasonal variation, and ability to establish an immediate dialogue with the surrounding landscape.

The garden has been designed for a young family, with functional elements sintroducing a subtle sense of playfulness throughout. Oversized concrete stepping stones, large flat boulders and gentle water movement create opportunities for informal, natural play, encouraging movement, balance, and exploration within the landscape.

We wanted the site to feel highly cohesive, with a material palette defined by natural tones and textures that sit comfortably within the surrounding landscape. The selection is deliberately restrained, strengthening the relationship between house and garden and creating a unified design language across the scheme.

Polished concrete, gravel, and natural stone boulders form the primary material framework, grounding the design while reflecting the muted tones, mood, and character of the wider site.

The planting is conceived as a naturalistic matrix, designed to emphasise simplicity, movement, and seasonal change. Evergreen grasses provide a continuous structural base, while flowering perennials emerge throughout the year, adding subtle variation, texture, and softness
